This exciting event will feature workshops, presentations, and a banquet gala (with entertainment). A Call for Presentations is posted here. EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE – July 25, 2008 This workshop, for Deaf and hearing interpreters, explores the skill sets and schemas required for effective community interpreting. Community interpreting requires awareness of discourse patterns and how participants construct meaning together in a given interaction, and the impact of our decisions on the evolving dialogue. The workshop is designed to allow participants to examine the opportunities, reasons, and decision-making points for blending the use of consecutive interpreting (CI) and simultaneous interpreting (SI) within community settings. By exploring the differences in the quality of our work when providing SI and CI, participants can consider their own work and the consequences of choices they make. The discussions will examine the multitude of features that can guide our decisions, ranging from discourse structures to the age of the consumer. The workshop will also allow for hands-on practice with local Deaf community members joining us for live role-plays. Workshop will be presented in ASL. Interpreters not provided. Space limited to 20 participants. Pre-registration suggested.

| Karen Malcolm is an interpreter and interpreter educator based in the Vancouver, BC area. Her background includes a wide range of interpreting experience over the past 25 years. She specializes in interpreting in mental health and medical settings. Karen holds the Certificate of Interpretation (COI) from AVLIC. She has been teaching interpreting to both novice and experienced interpreters for 18 years, and holds a Masters of Science in Education (Teaching Interpreting) from Western Maryland College. She has taught workshops and courses throughout Canada and the U.S., including a year at Gallaudet University in the M.A. in Interpretation program. She is currently an instructor in the Department of Sign Language Interpretation at Douglas College, New Westminster, BC. | ||
| Debra Russell is an interpreter, educator, and researcher based in Calgary, Alberta. She has been interpreting in a wide range of settings for 25 years and holds the Certificate of Interpretation (COI) from AVLIC. Deb holds the David Peikoff Chair of Deafness Studies at the University of Alberta. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Calgary. She has taught workshops and given presentations throughout North America, Sweden, Ukraine, Malaysia and Australia. She maintains an active interpreting practice and participates in several interpreting organizations, currently serving as the North American representative for the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters. | ||
