Edwin Cancel is a Newyocruciorican who has been interpreting since 1996. He holds RID-NIC, Texas BEI Level III, as well as BEI Trilingual – Master certification. He has done extensive work in developing the trilingual certification testing materials for the state of TX. He received his Master of Science in Deaf Education/Deaf Studies from Lamar University in Beaumont, TX, a Bachelor or Arts in Special Education from New Mexico Highlands University, and is a graduate of Santa Fe Community College’s trilingual training program. He co-authored and edited a CD-ROM developed for teaching Hispanic parents how to sign lullabies to their infants. He currently works as a private practice interpreter and Trilingual Video Interpreter in the Houston, TX metropolitan area. Edwin’s passion is bridging cultures through cultural matching.

Antonio Hesabee-Ramos has been interpreting since the age of thirteen, for his parents and as a professional. He was born and raised in Mexico D.F. and Houston, TX. He holds Texas interpreter certification and is pursuing a Bachelors Degree in International Business. He is currently working as an interpreter in private practice, as well as a Trilingual Video Relay Interpreter in the Houston Metropolitan area. |
Este taller está diseñado para ampliar el conocimiento de los participantes de los dialectos del español y su aplicación en entornos de retransmisión (relay) de video. Se examinarán los registros comunes del entorno de retransmisión de video. Se repasarán las diferencias entre los diversos dialectos dentro del Caribe y de México con el objetivo de fomentar la idea de la necesidad de solidaridad y entendimiento mutuo. Los temas incluirán cómo se forman los grupos y perpetúan los estereotipos del otro, las áreas dentro de las que los dos grupos están y no están de acuerdo, dónde/cómo se pueden establecer y/o fortalecer las alianzas, educarse entre sí, reconocer nuestras identidades, combatir la mentalidad “ellos vs. nosotros”. Los participantes deben irse del taller con una mejor comprensión de su mundo y de la diversidad que los rodea, al igual que de las herramientas para implementar técnicas en el entorno de trabajo cotidiano. |
This workshop is designed to broaden the participants’ knowledge of Spanish dialects and its application in the video relay setting. Registers common to the video relay setting will be examined. Differences between the various dialects within Caribbean and Mexico will be reviewed with the goal of fostering the idea of the necessity of solidarity and mutual understanding. Topics will include how each group forms and perpetuate stereotypes of the other, areas in which the two groups agree and disagree, where/how alliances can be established and/or strengthened, educating each other, acknowledging our identities, combating the “them vs. us mentality. Participants should leave the workshop with a better understanding of their world and the diversity around them as well as tools for implementing techniques in their daily work environment. |
