Region I Representative Lloyd (Eloy)Carrera de los Santos, M.Ed

Hola a la familia nueva mia, Mano a Mano! I am second generation Cuban. All 4 of my abuelos are from Cuba (Habana y San Antonio de los Baños). Me and my family were all born in Ybor City which was a predominately Cuban barrio of Tampa Bay, Florida. My father went to the 3rd grade and worked all his life in a cigar factory there. Mom went up to junior high school. Both went to Cuba in their life time. Mom to learn how to embroidery , dad to just visit from time to time. Spanish was the main language in our home until my Down Syndrome sister was born and then doctors told my parents that if she was to receive help they must speak only English with her or she would be confused. Which we all know is pura mentira. My sister is 11 years older than me, so by the time I was born they were speaking both Spanish and English in our home. The only abuelo I knew was my Abuela Sara who only spoke Spanish and died when I was 6 years old. I have fought most of my life for my Spanish language use and culture and consider myself a proud Latino. I will be traveling to Cuba for the first time next summer. My wife of 26 years is a Deaf Americanita, our foster, Deaf son, 25, is half Puerto Riqueño. We have 2 hearing daughters 24 and 20 who are both interpreters for the Deaf. I am excited, thrilled and honored to be a part of Mano a Mano and to serve as Region 1 Representative. I had an amazing experience this past July in Philly with so many hermanos y hermanas de la familia Mano a Mano. Gracias,
Welcome to Region I
